On August 1st, the Boston’s Downtown Women’s Club meetup was held at Scholar’s, right across from Borders in Downtown Crossing. The Downtown Women’s Club is a business network and career website that makes professional networking affordable, effective, and enjoyable.
What was it like?
There were about 15-20 people there. We were upstairs on the balcony, away from the hustle and bustle of the dinnertime rush, which was necessary for conversation and walking around. Nametags were not available, but there were business cards floating all around me, being passed from person to person. Unfortunately for me, I did not look like I was part of the meetup. I was the only one wearing jeans. For those planning to attend one of their meetups, keep this in mind.
Who will be there?
The average attendee is between the ages of 30 and 40 and is typically a small business owner. These women use DWC for networking and expanding their client base, but since the recent recession, the needs of the members have fluxed. Meetups give the members valuable information they can use in their future endeavors. Spa events, fashion trunk shows, and educational meetups have just been a few of the things the Downtown Women’s Club- Boston chapter have done alongside traditional meetups.
Comparing Boston and Cambridge
As someone who has gone to both the Downtown Women’s Club in Boston and the one in Cambridge, I can say that the dynamic of each meetup (and the members) is different. I felt as though the Boston chapter was geared towards networking and had more formal atmosphere, where the Cambridge chapter was more laid back and allowed room for small talk and giggles.
