How about a cultural institution.... ICA, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum,MFA,science museum......
West on Centre in West Roxbury has a new function room. Exposed brick, patio, very nice for a smallish crowd (30-40). Restaurant/bar is upscale casual. http://westoncentreboston.com.
Contact/DM Eleanor Greene @WestonCentre. Eleanor and her husband Joe are friends of mine and I have just introduced them to Twitter/social media.

The Microsoft NERD Center in Cambridge is unbeatable and hosts tons of events.
I have given workshops and panel discussions at the UMASS Boston Club on Franklin Street. Good if professional image is important.
It depends on the size of the crowd. When we first started Boston SEO meetup, we would have a round table discussion at a Panera Bread. But then it got too loud with all the kitchen noise. Plus are group went from a dozen to 75 attendees. So we moved to a local library conference room. But others have gotten free space at Microsoft to other corporate offices.

I have a GREAT location!!! WorkBar in downtown Boston (http://workbarboston.com). As a group of professionals we are very interested in hosting networking and professional events. We also share a working relationship with Les Zygomates, a great jazz restaurant located below our workspace which has expressed interest in hosting a portion of the event with appetizers in their space! Please contact me at evona.wiktoria@gmail.com for more information I would love to work with any groups interested in the space.
I am interested in organising a tweet-up at our Brookline location. In the first week of August.
Great facilities, overhead projector, white board, convenient parking/T access.

Obviously I have a vested interest in seeing more events held at the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation in Waltham http://www.crmi.org. (I'm on the board and showing off the Museum is one reason I created Mass Innovation Nights.) It has a great small amphitheater, small meeting areas, the museum floor and the ballroom. Plus, I am looking for more events to be held out in the 'burbs and along 128.
