In this episode Joselin Mane, reviews the 5 TweetUps in the Boston area and highlights some of the weeks most interesting events including TEDxBoston. This week there are two NH Tweetups, a tweetup part of a weekly @Landsdown Tweetup Tuesday series, a #140Conf tweetup to prep for a upcoming conference and new tweetup hosted by a couple that are about to get married.

In this episode Joselin Mane, explains what a TweetUp is and their benefits as he goes over this week’s events. One of the biggest questions I get is what is a tweetup and what makes it different than a regular networking event.

Scott Monty, a Bostonian who currently works at Ford, coined the phrase TweetUp and the Social Media world hasn’t been the same since. I also ask you what your thoughts are.

After a very successful Social Media Day event in Boston this week seems to be a very low key week, with not that many events. There are two tweetups both on Tuesday. The No Excuse Tweetup is an after event for the Girls In Tech group and Tweetup Tuesday is the first in part of a series put on by The Landsdowne.

Almost a year after Jeff Pulver started the #140Conf he hosted his first Boston #140Conf Tweetup with the assistance of Ellen Rossano. The event was held at the Tamo Bar located in the Seaport Hotel, which btw is a great place to host tweetups.

So after Jeff’s keynote at MIT Enterprise Forum in Cambridge he was escorted to the tweetup by Lois Ardito, Principal/ Realtor, Avenue 3 Real Estate LLC. After meeting and hugging a few of his closest friends he ask Steve Garfield to join him as he talked about the history & future of the #140Conf.

The #bbblogers TweetUp held on 6/17/2010 was a fun event and really showed what is great about tweetups. This was a tweetup where LiLu, a Mass native who is currently living in Washington DC, tweetup for Boston Bloggers.  She used twtvite to promote her event, which is an ideal site to help reinforce the casual and social nature of her tweetup. And although I almost always generally recommend Eventbrite for tweetups, twtvite is an excellent alternative for the more casual tweetups.

“Want to grab drinks with a fantastic group of people?” was all she need to say to attract like minded people that also happen to love to blog. That statement also implied that if you attended the tweetup you were also a fantastic person, Great Marketing!

The result was a gathering of cool lady bloggers  and myself, that only male (one of the many sacrifices I make for @BostonTweetUp ).  Although there were a couple of 20 inch TVs there, the men bloggers were most likely watching the Boston Celtics play game 7 of the NBA finals elsewhere.

By visiting everyone’s blogs afterwards, it seemed like the majority of the attendees there had already made connections online beforehand and were just meeting IRL (In Real Life) for the first time.

We talked, laughed*, and had some drinks, in the end we all had a better understanding of each other and what we were all involved with besides blogging.

*A good portion of the night was spent laughing about everyone’s (but me of course) experience of going to the ladies bathroom. The tale involved going up and down some stairs, interacting with the wait staff and finally a mirror in the bathroom! Ask us about this crazy story at the next tweetup.

This event is a great example of what is so great about tweetups and how they can be leveraged as a great resource for connecting. What separates this tweetup from say a traditional gathering is the use of a hashtag, in our case #BBBlogger.  A hashtag is a tool primarily used to filter conversations on twitter.  Now everyone, whether they were there or not, could be apart of the event by simply using the hashtag #BBBlogger whenever they tweeted.

And although I was the only male there, I didn’t feel out of place and that was a testament to the great host and Social Media Maven LiLu aka @LivitLuvit http://www.livitluvit.com/ Lilu is extremely welcoming, charismatic, funny and outgoing. It is no wonder why she has quite the online following. She is also quiet the online entertainer as evidence of the Tosh.0 style video she has on youtube called:  Surprise Trust Falls: Abusing Tourists on the National Mall

The Boston Tweetup Difference!

This is a case study on the BostonTweetUp Difference. Given that there are almost 20+ event calendars options for the Boston area, BostonTweetUp wants to highlight how we are working for you (event goers, organizers, venues & sponsors).

Every event is different and requires a unique strategy

We will be looking at Bon Voyage Tweetup #BVBoston as an example.

One month before the event BostonTweetUp recieved information on this event. We looked at all elements of this event and determined that what it needed most, as it had many elements to make it sucessful already, was an initial sign up push. So to show you the power BostonTweetUp can have we are showing you some of the backend tracking that we do for every event.

With one tweet we:

• Got 19 people to sign up for the event
• Were 84% of the traffic that the sign up page had in the 24 hours after the tweet
• And that was all with over a month until the event.

This is a mini review of the Innovation Beer Summit Tweetup. This Tweetup was dubbed as “joining innovators in Boston for beer and conversation on innovation, social media, and anything that makes you smile.” And that it did. It was great group that combined both a sit down meal with great conversation. There were three wave of attendees at the event and I left right before the third wave arrived.
